FAQ

How much space do I need?

Not much at all. Bees fly up to 3km, so they only need a small, quiet corner of your property. We'll help choose a spot that avoids walkways and keeps everyone comfortable.

What happens when the hive arrives?

Bees will fly in small circles around the entrance for 1–2 days as they learn their surroundings. After that, they'll head straight to nearby nectar sources — often your garden.

Are pets okay around a hive?

Yes. Cats and dogs naturally avoid the hive. If your pet has a known bee‑sting allergy, keep antihistamines on hand.

When do I get my honey?

We harvest once a year in summer (usually January). You'll receive the honey included in your package in 1kg or 3kg tubs. Honey is raw, unprocessed, and harvested locally at our Coalgate base.

Additional honey may be available for purchase — just ask before harvest.

Why are bees clustering on the front of the hive?

On hot days, bees gather at the entrance to help cool the hive. This is normal and temporary.

Why are fewer bees flying on cold days?

Bees stay inside to maintain the hive at around 35°C. Reduced activity is normal in cooler weather.

How do I know if my hive has swarmed?

You may see a cloud of bees settling on a nearby branch. Swarming looks dramatic but bees are not aggressive during this process. If you think your hive has swarmed, contact us and we'll collect them.

Can I open the hive myself?

No — for the safety of the bees and the queen, only our team should open the hive. Temperature changes and disturbance can harm the colony.

Can I join in during a hive visit?

Absolutely. If you'd like a hands‑on educational experience, we can arrange this during one of our visits (spring–autumn). Bookings essential.
